Brasil Seasons Jun 2026
Deep Report: The Seasons of Brazil 1. Fundamental Overview: The Southern Hemisphere Context Unlike the Northern Hemisphere, Brazil’s seasons are defined by the position of the Earth relative to the sun in the Southern Hemisphere.
Summer: December 21 – March 20 Autumn: March 20 – June 20 Winter: June 20 – September 22 Spring: September 22 – December 21
Because Brazil is a continental-sized country (8.5 million km²) straddling the Equator, seasons are not uniform. The country spans five major climatic zones: Equatorial, Tropical, Semi-arid, Highland Tropical, and Subtropical.
2. Detailed Seasonal Breakdown by Region A. Summer (December – March) brasil seasons
General character: High temperatures, high humidity, heavy rainfall (except in the semi-arid Northeast interior). North Region (Amazonia): The wettest period. Daily torrential rains (often afternoon downpours) cause river levels to rise (flood season for the Amazon River). Temperatures: 24–32°C (75–90°F), near 100% humidity. Southeast (Rio, São Paulo, Minas Gerais): Hot, humid, and stormy. Sudden, intense convective storms can cause flash floods and landslides. Temperatures often exceed 35°C (95°F). This is also peak tourist season (New Year’s and Carnival). South (Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul): Warm, but with occasional cold fronts. Severe thunderstorms, hail, and even tornadoes possible. Temperatures: 22–30°C (72–86°F). Semi-arid (Sertão, Nordeste): The interior of Northeast Brazil (e.g., Bahia, Ceará) experiences its short rainy season (Jan-Mar), but droughts remain common.
B. Autumn (March – June)
General character: Transitional. Temperatures gradually drop, humidity decreases. One of the most pleasant times in many regions. Southeast & Central-West: Dryer air begins. Mornings can be crisp, afternoons warm. Rio de Janeiro sees less rain, clearer skies. Ideal for hiking. South: First signs of frost (late May) in higher areas (Serra Gaúcha). Temperatures range 15–25°C (59–77°F). Amazon: Rains diminish, but rivers remain high. Accessibility improves in floodplain areas. Deep Report: The Seasons of Brazil 1
C. Winter (June – September)
General character: The dry season in most of Brazil, but cold in the South and surprisingly cool in parts of the Southeast. South Region: The only area with true winter. Frequent frost, fog, and occasional snow in high-altitude cities (São Joaquim, Urubici). Temperatures can drop below 0°C (32°F). Polar air masses cause friagem (cold spells). Southeast (São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Brasília): Mild and dry. Daytime highs 18–24°C (64–75°F), but nights can drop to 8–12°C (46–54°F). Very low humidity (often <30%), leading to respiratory issues and wildfires. No snow . Central-West (Pantanal, Cuiabá): Peak dry season. This is the best time for wildlife viewing in the Pantanal (animals gather around shrinking waterholes). Days warm, nights cold (5–10°C / 41–50°F). North & Northeast coast: Warm year-round. Winter means slightly lower rain and milder nights (22°C / 72°F), but still tropical.
D. Spring (September – December)
General character: Warming up, humidity rising, and dramatic thunderstorms returning. Southeast & Central-West: Extreme fire risk in early spring (Sept-Oct). By November, the first summer rains arrive (often explosive, ending the dry season). This is a spectacular time for flowering species, especially the ipê trees (yellow, pink, purple blooms). Pantanal: Flood season begins (Nov-Dec). Roads become impassable, but boat-based wildlife viewing peaks. South: Warm, pleasant. Risk of hailstorms increases. Semi-arid Northeast: Still dry until December. The “summer rains” begin late in spring.
3. The Dry vs. Wet Season Dichotomy For most of Brazil (outside the subtropical South), the traditional four-season model is less useful than the Dry Season and Wet Season : | Season | Months (approx) | Regions affected | Characteristics | |--------|----------------|------------------|------------------| | Wet | Oct – Apr | Amazon, Central-West, Southeast | Daily afternoon rains, high humidity, lush vegetation, mosquitoes abundant. | | Dry | May – Sept | Amazon, Central-West, Southeast, Northeast interior | No rain for weeks/months, low humidity, dust, clear skies, wildfires (human-caused). | Example – Brasília: Dry season humidity can fall to 10-15%, causing public health alerts. Wet season sees 150-200mm monthly rainfall.
