Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) arrives in the Glade, a society of adolescent boys who have established rules for survival. They are led by Alby (Ami Ameen) and the stoic Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), while the Runner, Minho (Ki Hong Lee), maps the Maze. Thomas’s arrival—the first in three years—coincides with a mysterious girl, Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), who carries a cryptic message: “She’s the last one ever.” Thomas becomes a Runner and, after a series of Griever attacks, deduces that the Maze is a code. In the climax, the group discovers the Maze is a test, and they are released into a barren wasteland, only to be captured by armed scientists.
Inside the city, the lines between hero and villain blur as they encounter former friends who have chosen different sides.
