Loon successfully provided LTE connectivity to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria devastated the island’s infrastructure. It was a technological triumph. However, in 2021, Alphabet shut Loon down. The economics simply didn't work; the cost of maintaining a fleet of balloons was too high compared to lowering satellite costs. It was a classic X outcome: a technical miracle that couldn't find a sustainable business model.

Walking into the X headquarters (for those lucky enough to get past security), the atmosphere is less like a corporate office and more like a chaotic university lab run by benevolent mad scientists. There is a "Maker Space" cluttered with CNC machines, 3D printers, and half-assembled robotics.
