Microsoft officially ended support for these older Windows operating systems in subsequent VS Code releases because newer versions require an updated Electron framework (and by extension, a newer Chromium engine) that no longer runs on Windows 7.
In July 2022, Microsoft released the update. While newer versions continued for other platforms, version 1.70.3 was created specifically as a "legacy" patch. It served as the terminal official release for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 users.

Finding the installer can be tricky since the main download page always defaults to the newest version.
Version 1.70.3 is effectively frozen in time. You will not receive security patches, bug fixes, or new features. As months pass, the gap between your editor and the current industry standard will widen.
If you must use Windows 7, install 1.70.3, but actively plan a migration to Windows 10, Windows 11, or a Linux distribution to ensure your development toolkit remains secure and functional.
Using older software on an unsupported operating system like Windows 7 carries security risks. It is recommended to use this setup only in isolated environments or for legacy project maintenance.
