The "Ju-On" (meaning "Grudge Curse") is born when someone dies in the grip of extreme rage. Kayako's life was defined by loneliness and obsession, beginning with a childhood where she was often neglected. In university, she harbored an unrequited love for a classmate, Shunsuke Kobayashi (Peter Kirk in American versions), and kept a detailed diary of her feelings.

This political stance, while principled, led to her further marginalization. The mainstream literary establishment, which leaned conservative or apolitical, stopped reviewing her work. By the time of her death in 1998, she was largely forgotten except by feminist scholars and labor historians.
