The concept of the 40-day fast has its roots in many cultures and traditions. In the Bible, we find the story of Jesus Christ in the wilderness, where he fasted for 40 days and nights (Matthew 4:1-11). This period of fasting was seen as a way for Jesus to prepare for his ministry and to demonstrate his commitment to his purpose. Similarly, in ancient Jewish tradition, the 40-day fast was a time of purification and spiritual renewal.
The debt had never been explained to children. Only that a mistake made by the first settlers—a broken pact with the thing that lived in the Sourwood Bog—had to be repaid with a single, perfect hour of absolute stillness. If a floorboard creaked, if a baby cried, if a dog barked… the charter promised that the Bog would send its Harvesters to collect a different price.
