The STL (Stereolithography) format is the industry standard for 3D printing. It describes a 3D object as a series of triangular facets. Without this extension or native support, SketchUp cannot communicate with "slicer" software (like Cura or PrusaSlicer) that tells a 3D printer how to build your object.

Google SketchUp (Trimble) is a prominent tool in architectural and basic 3D design due to its intuitive push-pull interface. However, its surface-based geometry engine creates significant barriers for Additive Manufacturing (AM), specifically regarding the export of valid Stereolithography (STL) files. This paper analyzes the efficacy of third-party Ruby extensions in correcting non-manifold geometry. Through a comparative analysis of extensions such as Solid Inspector² and Artisan , this study demonstrates that real-time error detection and mesh repair tools are mandatory dependencies for users intending to translate SketchUp models into physical prototypes. The paper concludes with a recommended workflow pipeline for ensuring watertight mesh integrity prior to slicing. The STL (Stereolithography) format is the industry standard
