In networked and local printing environments, the print spooler service acts as an intermediary between software applications and hardware printers. Each document sent to a printer is temporarily stored as a spool file ( .SPL and .SHD on Windows, or .cf files on CUPS systems). While this spooling mechanism allows background printing, it is vulnerable to failures:
