Very little is known about William Gomez other than he was born on April 5, 1939, he was from Gibraltar, he was a renowned classical guitarist and teacher, and he wrote this arrangement (in Spanish) of the “Ave Maria” shortly before he died from cancer on December 2, 2000. I did find a request for the score from about 10 years ago. It was answered by the composer’s brother, stating, “At present there are some issues concerning my brother's estate and in particular his "Ave Maria" composition. As a consequence, the music score for this piece is not yet available to the general public. I and others are working very hard to try and resolve these issues as soon as possible and I am confident that a resolution will be found later this year.” Continued research just confuses the issue! It was Elīna Garanča’s performance that I found in 2018; it has since been recorded by many others, but in my opinion, hers is the best. It’s quite simple musically – you can “hear” the guitar in the accompaniment. I’ve never played it for anyone who didn’t love it, in fact I posted it to a new friend just the other day!
