Tragically, the Suima Princess's fate was not to end with exile alone. According to legend, her lover, Sugawara no Michizane, was forced to flee the capital as well, and the two were never reunited. Devastated by the loss of her beloved, the Suima Princess took her own life, either by drowning or starvation, in a fit of despair.
