According to tradition, in 1232 (or 1231), the Muslim ruler of the area, Abu Zeid, was interrogating two Christian priests. To mock the Eucharist, he demanded they celebrate Mass. At the moment of consecration, Christ and a company of angels appeared, descending from heaven. Christ was carrying a double-barred cross. The angels placed the cross on the altar, allowing the priests to complete the Mass. Deeply moved, Abu Zeid converted to Christianity and took the name Vicente.
