By modernizing the building's HVAC systems and utilizing energy-efficient materials, the University of Virginia has significantly reduced the structure's environmental footprint. Furthermore, the library’s collection management was optimized. While millions of volumes remain on-site in compact, climate-controlled shelving, the physical space has been reclaimed for people, reflecting a global shift in library science from "book storage" to "intellectual hubs."
