In the corporate towers of Tokyo, the engineers at PFU (a Fujitsu subsidiary) saw this not just as an inefficiency, but as a fundamental misunderstanding of how humans work. They didn't want to make a "better" flatbed. They wanted to kill the flatbed.
Competing scanners came with drivers that required IT degrees to install. They produced massive, unmanageable TIFF files. The ScanSnap, however, shipped with a "lite" version of ABBYY FineReader. It silently performed OCR (Optical Character Recognition) in the background. scansnap
