The film's enduring legacy is anchored by its powerhouse cast. Geoffrey Rush delivers a career-defining performance as the Marquis, imbuing the infamous libertine with a mix of wit, malice, and tragic dignity. His de Sade is a man who would rather bleed his stories onto bedsheets than live in silence. Have you seen Quills
The asylum's administrator, torn between compassion and moral duty. Dr. Royer-Collard September 2, 2000 (Telluride Premiere); November 22, 2000
The central conflict is simple: The asylum director takes away the Marquis’s ink and paper. So, the Marquis writes on his bedsheet with wine. They take that away. So he writes on the walls with… let’s just say, biological materials .
The film draws a sharp contrast between the "perverse" Sade and the "moral" Doctor. While Sade writes about depravity, Royer-Collard commits depravity (marrying a child, torturing patients). The film suggests that those who most loudly demand censorship often have the darkest secrets.
