Leo found a simple guide: go to Samsung’s support site, search his model number, and download the firmware file (a .RUF or .ISO file) onto a USB stick formatted in FAT32. Then, insert the USB into the player, go to Settings > Support > Software Update > By USB. It took seven minutes. No internet dropout, no freezing.
