Technically, Descent was a marvel. While Doom used 2.5D raycasting (simulating 3D with 2D math), Descent used a true 3D polygonal engine. This allowed for arbitrary geometry—rooms over rooms, bridges you could fly under or over, and complex shapes that were impossible in other engines of the era.
This design choice fundamentally altered the psychology of the shooter. In Doom , an enemy could be in front of you, behind you, or to the side. In Descent , an enemy could be directly above you, clinging to a ceiling that you haven’t realized is a floor yet. The level design exploited this ruthlessly. Rooms were cylindrical, shafts spiraled downward endlessly, and doors often required the player to rotate their ship 90 degrees just to align with the hallway. the descent torrent
This creates a sensation unique to Descent : the loss of proprioception. Players often lose track of where "down" is, leading to a genuine sensation of vertigo.
