Episode 1 sets up a study of power dynamics. Unlike Spartacus , which was a story of liberation, House of Ashur promises to be a story of consolidation. It asks: What happens when the slave becomes the master? The premiere suggests that Ashur will be a crueler master than Batiatus because he knows the tricks of the enslaved. He knows how to plot, and therefore, he knows how to preempt plots against him.
Flashback (brief, stylized): We see a young Ashur watching Spartacus break chains. Spartacus spares Ashur’s life, says: “You are not worthy of the blade. Live with shame.”
Drakon refuses to speak. Ashur tortures him lightly (a hot iron near the eye). Drakon finally growls: “Your walls will drink your blood before moon’s end.”
