His manipulation of Alex is masterfully written; he doesn't use physical force, but emotional parasitism. He absorbs the grief of the train and spins it into loyalty.

The B-plot involving the Headwoods and the frozen bodies is genuinely chilling. The FX team outdid themselves with the frozen corpses, and the concept of keeping bodies "on ice" for potential future revival (or organ harvesting) adds a science-fiction horror element that the show excels at.
